Download your resume as PDF, Word or PowerPoint
A good resume is only half the job. The file you send matters too: the wrong format can break the layout, or stop an applicant tracking system (ATS) from reading it at all.
This guide shows how to build a resume, which download format to choose for each situation, and how to check it reads cleanly before you apply.
Build and download a resume in 4 steps
- Open skillzunocv and pick one of 100+ resume designs, or start from a blank page.
- Fill in your details: contact info, summary, experience, education and skills. Job tracks suggest what to include for your line of work.
- Run the ATS check. It gives a score and a list of fixes, such as adding keywords from the job post.
- Download the resume as PDF, Word or PowerPoint.
PDF, Word or PowerPoint: which should you download?
PDF: the safe default
Send a PDF unless the job post asks for something else. The layout looks the same on every device, and modern ATS software reads text-based PDFs well.
Word (DOCX): when a recruiter asks for it
Some recruiters and agencies want a Word file so they can add their logo or remove your contact details. Download Word when the application form or recruiter asks for .doc or .docx.
PowerPoint: for portfolio and visual roles
Designers, marketers and product people sometimes present their resume or use it as a one-page portfolio slide. PowerPoint makes that easy to edit and present.
Make your resume ATS-friendly
- Use standard section headings like Experience, Education and Skills.
- Keep contact details in the body of the page, not only in a header or footer.
- Mirror a few keywords from the job description where they are true for you.
- Avoid putting key information inside images or text boxes a scanner cannot read.
- Name the file clearly, for example firstname-lastname-resume.pdf.
Create your own resume template
If none of the designs is quite right, change colours and gradients, fonts, shapes and patterns, header style, photo frame and section rules until it is yours. Save it as your own template and reuse it for every application.
skillzunocv also builds matching cover letters, so the resume and letter look like a set.
